The program also uniquely utilizes a senior volunteer workforce to not only support student academic success, but also to address challenges facing older adults. As more and more baby boomers reach retirement age, there is a greater need to create opportunity for engagement within and among the senior population.

Research demonstrates older adults who remain socially, mentally and physically active have better physical and mental health, and reduced risk of dementia and depression. The 2019 OC Indicators Report identifies residents age 65 and older as the only age group expected to account for a larger percent of the county population over the next 40 years than it does today. It is critical that this growing population have opportunities like our program that allow them to remain connected to their community, have a sense of purpose, and help them maintain their social, physical and mental health.
